Northern Territories Warn of Electricity Crisis, Demand Billions in Federal Funding

Representatives from all three Canadian territories say the need to upgrade aging electricity grids has reached a critical level. Yukon's energy minister warned that temperatures near -50 C in December pushed demand to 90 per cent of generating capacity, nearly triggering rolling blackouts in Whitehorse. Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut are collectively requesting billions in federal infrastructure investment to keep the lights on and support growing critical minerals development. Published March 26, 2026.

First Nations Agency Seeks Equity Role in Canada's National Grid Buildout

A new First Nations-led agency, headed by Kwatuuma (Cole Sayers), is seeking a leading role in building out Canada's fragmented interprovincial electricity grid. The federal government has estimated the national grid project would be a larger undertaking than construction of the CPR. The initiative aims to ensure Indigenous equity and economic participation in what could be one of Canada's largest-ever infrastructure projects, according to the Vancouver Sun. Published late March 2026.

Hydro-Quebec Explores Linking Grid to Nova Scotia's Proposed Offshore Wind Farms

Hydro-Quebec has issued a formal request for information from energy developers to assess costs and timelines for connecting its grid to proposed offshore wind developments in Nova Scotia. The Quebec utility, which has 16 interconnections with neighbouring jurisdictions, says growing demand — compounded by a three-year drought reducing reservoir capacity — is driving the need for new sources. The federal government has signalled support for the Wind West project. Published March 25, 2026.

Manitoba Budget Allocates $10M for Churchill Energy Corridor Development

The Manitoba NDP's 2026–27 budget includes a $10-million catalyst fund to attract private investment to an energy corridor running from the Prairies to Churchill on Hudson Bay. Finance Minister Adrien Sala said the initiative could carry oil, natural gas, potash, or hydrogen to eastern markets. The budget also notes that Manitoba Hydro recorded significant losses in 2025–26 due to drought-related generation shortfalls. Published March 24, 2026.

OPG Sells U.S. Renewable Subsidiary at $477M Loss to Refocus on Ontario Nuclear and Hydro

Ontario Power Generation has sold its U.S. subsidiary, Eagle Creek Renewable Energy, to Apollo Global Management for $1.48 billion USD — roughly $477 million Canadian less than it paid. OPG says proceeds will be reinvested in Ontario priorities: Pickering nuclear refurbishment, new small modular reactors, and hydroelectric plant modernisation. The utility said the decision aligns with Ontario's Integrated Energy Plan and projected electricity demand growth to 2050. Published late March 2026.

Nova Scotia Energy Board Approves Rate Hike, but Orders Cutbacks to Utility Spending

The Nova Scotia Energy Board has conditionally approved Nova Scotia Power's application to raise residential rates in 2026 and 2027, but ordered several spending reductions. The board trimmed $8 million from operating and maintenance expenses, $1.8 million from fuel and purchased power costs, and cut executive compensation recovery. The final residential rate increase will be "slightly lower" than the 8.1 per cent originally sought. Nova Scotia Power must recalculate and report back within two weeks. Published March 25, 2026.

Carney Government Signs Deal with Nova Scotia to Streamline Major Project Reviews

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston announced an agreement to simplify and align federal and provincial environmental approvals for major infrastructure and energy projects. The province will determine on a project-by-project basis whether to use a "one project, one review" model. Projects likely to benefit include offshore wind transmission lines, marine terminals, and pipelines. The deal follows recent energy agreements between Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Massachusetts. Published March 28, 2026.

N.B. Power Disputes Battery Storage as Reliable Replacement for Planned Gas Plant

N.B. Power's vice-president of asset management told a utility board hearing that large-scale battery storage cannot meet the utility's operational requirement of 400 megawatts available for up to 72 hours during extreme winter events. The testimony came as the utility continues to evaluate smaller 50-megawatt battery projects. Data from the February 2023 cold snap showed intervals where the utility had no import capacity from neighbours and wind generation was insufficient to recharge batteries. Published late March 2026.

First Nations and Rural Albertans Demand Federal Review of $16.5B Pathways Carbon Capture Project

A coalition of Indigenous leaders, farmers, and rural Albertans calling itself No CO2 Pipelines Alberta launched this week, demanding a federal environmental impact assessment of the Pathways Alliance carbon capture and storage project. The proposed $16.5-billion facility would use a 400-kilometre CO2 pipeline linking more than 20 oilsands facilities to an underground storage hub near Cold Lake. Proponents say the project could eliminate 22 million tonnes of emissions annually by 2030. Published March 25, 2026.
