⚛️ Canada unveils its most ambitious nuclear energy strategy in decades, targeting SMRs, uranium exports, and new builds nationwide. 🏗️ Ontario installs the first new reactor foundation in 30-plus years at Darlington, cementing the G7's first commercial SMR. 💡 Nova Scotia Power's 3.1% rate hike takes effect as the province's grid operator insists gas plants are non-negotiable.
National HeadlinesCanada Commits to Transformative New Nuclear Energy StrategyNatural Resources Canada, April 29th 2026 At the Canadian Nuclear Association's annual conference in Ottawa, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson announced that NRCan is developing a new Nuclear Energy Strategy to be released by year's end. The plan targets four objectives: enabling new nuclear builds across Canada, becoming a global supplier of nuclear technology, expanding uranium production, and advancing Canadian nuclear innovation including fission and fusion. Additionally, the Department of National Defence committed $40 million to assess the potential of a Canadian-controlled microreactor for remote northern military facilities. Regional RoundupOntario Installs Darlington's 2.1-Million-Pound SMR Basemat — First New Nuclear Foundation in 30+ YearsOntario Newsroom, April 29th 2026 Also at CNA2026, Ontario Minister Stephen Lecce announced the successful installation of a 2.1-million-pound basemat module at OPG's Darlington New Nuclear Project — the first new reactor foundation built in Ontario in over 30 years. The BWRX-300 small modular reactor, backed by a $2-billion commitment from the Canada Growth Fund and $1 billion from the Building Ontario Fund, is on track to be the G7's first commercial grid-scale SMR. Sixteen new supply-chain companies also signed on to deliver the project.
Policy & PricingNova Scotia Power's 3.1% Rate Increase Takes Effect May 1stCBC News, May 1st 2026 The first of two Nova Scotia Power rate increases approved by the Nova Scotia Energy Board went into effect May 1st, raising residential electricity bills by 3.1 per cent. A second increase of 3.9 per cent follows on January 1, 2027, for a combined 7.1 per cent hike over two years — modestly below the 8.1 per cent Nova Scotia Power originally proposed. The board's April 30th final order confirmed a regulated return on equity of nine per cent for the utility, with billing prorated based on the cycle date. N.S. Grid Operator: Natural Gas Peakers Cannot Be Replaced by Batteries AloneCBC News, April 29th 2026 Nova Scotia's newly formed Independent Energy System Operator (IESO) is standing firm on its plan to build new natural gas peaker plants to address the province's 1,700-megawatt capacity gap. VP of planning Chris Milligan said modelling shows it would take 1,000 MW of battery storage to replace a single 240 MW gas unit — an unaffordable ratio for ratepayers. The grid operator's plan pairs the peakers with onshore wind and demand-side management. Premier Tim Houston backed the IESO's position, though public opposition in affected communities continues to grow.
