Canada and Japan add ASF zoning protection for pork exports

RealAgriculture reports Canada and Japan will mutually recognize containment zones if African swine fever appears in part of Canada, allowing pork exports to continue from ASF-free zones. The agreement matters because Japan represented roughly $1.8 billion in Canadian pork and pork-product export value in 2025, and Canada now has zoning arrangements with markets representing nearly 69 per cent of pork export value.

For pork operations, the page is a practical compliance checkpoint: southern livestock-entry closures, suspected-case reporting and regional status updates all affect movement confidence even when confirmed detections remain outside commercial swine barns.

Nebraska team advances faster, lower-cost swine flu vaccine platform

The Pig Site reports University of Nebraska–Lincoln researchers developed a DNA-delivery vaccine technique using fat-like microscopic carriers for swine influenza. The team says a single dose generated strong antibody responses within seven to 14 days, and the platform could be faster, cheaper and easier to update than whole-virus vaccine formulations — a useful signal for breeding programs that depend on resilient herd-health baselines.

USDA highlights $105 million in screwworm preparedness research

USDA APHIS says the New World Screwworm Grand Challenge is funding 40 projects across sterile-fly production, traps and lures, therapeutics, wildlife surveillance and ecological modelling. The research agenda is not swine-specific, but feral and domestic pigs are part of the wider livestock-risk picture; better surveillance and response tools reduce the chance that animal-health shocks spill into commercial pig movement, welfare and export channels.

U.S. pork exports to Mexico hit record pace through April

The Pig Site reports U.S. pork exports to Mexico reached 403,675 metric tons in the first four months of 2026, up 5 per cent year over year and valued at just under $900 million. The same report flags a May disruption in variety-meat trade after Mexico restricted certain products linked to PRV antibody findings, while Japan and the Dominican Republic remained bright spots for demand.

USDA ERS lifts pork-production forecast as heavier hog weights pressure prices

USDA ERS increased its 2026 pork-production forecast to 27.995 billion pounds, 1.5 per cent above last year, citing heavier expected hog weights in the second and third quarters. ERS projects 2026 hog prices at $66.63 per cwt, more than 3 per cent below 2025, and sees 2027 production rising again to 28.290 billion pounds with lower average hog prices.
