Ottawa announces $26M for clean-energy projects in Alberta and Saskatchewan

Natural Resources Canada announced more than $26 million for 17 projects in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The funding covers energy storage, solar and wind development, interprovincial transmission planning, Indigenous-led clean energy, workforce development, renewable natural gas engineering, methane reduction, low-emissions cement alternatives, and energy-efficiency code work.

Pembina and partners approve $4.6B gas plant for Alberta data centre

Pembina Pipeline, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, and Kineticor Asset Management gave final approval to the Greenlight Electricity Centre in Sturgeon County. The 932 MW natural gas plant is designed to serve a data centre customer, with startup targeted for the second half of 2030 and permits allowing potential future capacity expansion.

Manitoba First Nation venture targets battery storage and renewables

Waywayseecappo First Nation, Ishkonigan Inc., and Volterra Technology formed the Waywayseecappo Energy Alliance to pursue battery storage and renewable energy projects. The alliance says its goals include developing 1,000 MWh of power through storage, wind, and solar, while Manitoba Hydro continues assessing utility-scale batteries in its long-term planning.

Manitoba storms leave thousands without power

Severe storms brought hail, high winds, tornado warnings, and power outages to southern and western Manitoba. Manitoba Hydro said crews worked overnight after winds downed poles and lines, with more than 6,000 customers affected while crews assessed damage, replaced broken poles, restrung conductors, and repaired equipment.

Storms knock out power for Ontario and Quebec customers

Severe thunderstorms left about 35,000 customers without power in Ontario and Quebec on Friday afternoon. Environment Canada said outages peaked at more than 214,000 customers in Ontario and nearly 140,000 in Quebec. Hydro One and Hydro-Quebec crews were working through heat and storm damage to restore service.

Hydro-Québec seeks new rate tier for high-use residential customers

Hydro-Québec asked the Régie de l'énergie to approve a new residential rate tier for households consuming more than 35,000 kWh annually. The utility estimates about 200,000 households, or 5% of customers, would be affected. Hydro-Québec says the added tier would send a price signal as demand growth requires higher-cost new supply.

IESO seeks renewable generator representative for Technical Panel

The IESO opened nominations for a Technical Panel member representing Ontario's Renewable Generator constituency. The panel advises the IESO Board on electricity-related Market Rule amendments. Nominees are expected to understand Ontario electricity markets, market rules, power-system operations, and technical or commercial sector issues.

Nova Scotia approves province's largest onshore wind project

Nova Scotia approved the Ocean Lake Wind Project in Guysborough County, with 158 turbines planned near several Eastern Shore communities. The project, backed by EverWind NS Holdings and Membertou Development Corp., is expected to generate about 1,200 MW when complete and support EverWind's second-phase green hydrogen and ammonia plans.

BC Hydro demonstrates EV-powered outdoor cinema

BC Hydro said Mission's July 10 outdoor movie night will run from an EV battery charged with the utility's clean electricity instead of a gas generator. The event is part of a Power Smart effort to demonstrate electric vehicles as mobile power sources for community events, homes, and businesses.
