National HeadlinesMeta data centre to start before adjacent Greenlight power plantGlobal News, July 10th 2026 Global News reports Meta's planned Alberta data centre is expected to start before the adjacent Greenlight Electricity Centre is in service. Meta has rights to connect to Alberta's grid and can use other suppliers before the gas-fired plant begins operating. Capital Power has also announced a 250-megawatt supply agreement for the project beginning in 2028. Federal document points to 20 GW of proposed data-centre capacityCanada's National Observer, July 8th 2026 Canada's National Observer reports a federal briefing document identified a large proposed increase in Canadian data-centre capacity, with most planned capacity located in Alberta. The document says Alberta projects could total more than 18 gigawatts, supported by natural gas generation. For utilities, the figures underline the size of emerging large-load interconnection, generation and emissions-planning challenges. Regional RoundupWestman residents push back on proposed Indigenous-owned wind projectWinnipeg Free Press, July 10th 2026 The Winnipeg Free Press reports residents near Polonia, Manitoba, are raising concerns about the proposed 200-megawatt Fleury Winds project, majority-owned by the Manitoba Metis Federation. The project would connect to the Manitoba Hydro grid through an existing Neepawa-area substation and is part of a broader provincial effort to add 600 megawatts of majority Indigenous-owned wind capacity by 2035.
