🔌 P.E.I. says new subsea cables matter, but local capacity still matters too. ⚖️ Manitoba Hydro's long-range capacity plan faces a summer PUB test. 📉 A C.D. Howe op-ed argues electricity pricing needs more honesty.
Maritime Electric president Jason Roberts says P.E.I. still needs local generation. Source: CBC News. National HeadlinesNew subsea cables alone won't solve P.E.I.'s power problems, Maritime Electric saysCBC News, July 31st 2026 Maritime Electric CEO Jason Roberts says two planned P.E.I.-New Brunswick subsea cables are an important reliability step, but not a complete answer. The utility says P.E.I. still needs local generation for security of supply, voltage support and winter demand growth. Ottawa has committed 5.9 million dollars for planning, studies, regulatory work and environmental assessment before construction targeted for 2028. Federal government invests in northern clean-energy projectsNatural Resources Canada, July 29th 2026 Ottawa announced nearly 7 million dollars for eight clean-energy projects in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Natural Resources Canada says the investments are intended to strengthen local electricity systems, reduce diesel reliance and support long-term economic growth. The release says CERRC-backed northern projects are adding more than 67 MW of clean energy to remote grids by 2027. OpinionWe need more honesty in electricity pricingC.D. Howe Institute, July 22nd 2026 Cole Diepold argues that Canadian electricity politics has leaned too long on smoothing, deferring or disguising system costs. His Financial Post op-ed, republished by C.D. Howe, says rising capital needs, grid expansion and affordability pressures require clearer long-term cost forecasts, better communication about financing requirements and a willingness to let rates rise gradually where costs justify it. For utilities and regulators, the takeaway is not simply higher bills; it is a credibility problem. If customers see only managed short-term prices, major infrastructure needs become harder to explain when the bill eventually arrives.
Maritime Electric operates P.E.I.’s islanded grid with significant reliance on New Brunswick imports. The utility’s near‑term pressure points include winter reliability margins, aging subsea cable assets, and a pending 150‑MW local generation requirement.
Challenges & Priorities
Regional RoundupManitoba Hydro's 10-year energy odyssey faces the criticsCBC News, August 3rd 2026 Manitoba Hydro is defending an integrated resource plan before the Public Utilities Board that includes 750 MW of new natural-gas turbines by 2030, 600 MW of Indigenous-led wind by 2035 and demand-side savings aimed at reducing peak demand. CBC reports the hearing is testing both the utility's forecast assumptions and whether alternatives such as time-of-use pricing should play a larger role. Learn

Learn more at IESO →Dozens protest Meta data centre planned for county north of EdmontonGlobal News, August 2nd 2026 Global News reports residents protested Meta's planned Alberta data centre, citing local concerns around water, noise and the associated gas-fired Greenlight Electricity Centre. Premier Danielle Smith has said Alberta's grid operator will use surplus energy until the new plant begins serving the centre in 2030. The story keeps Alberta's data-centre boom in the utility-affordability spotlight. Policy & PricingIESO administers prices and republishes July 30 market reportsIESO, July 30th 2026 Ontario's system operator administered prices for several intervals on July 30 after a market-results review. IESO says it republished real-time five-minute zonal, intertie, energy and operating-reserve LMP reports under market rules. It is a technical notice, but one that matters to market participants tracking settlement accuracy and the early operating record of Ontario's renewed market design.
Data-centre growth is forcing local governments to revisit land-use and power rules. Source: CBC News. Ottawa invests in EV infrastructure and grid-readiness educationEnvironment and Climate Change Canada, July 30th 2026 Environment and Climate Change Canada announced 10.9 million dollars for 22 EV infrastructure and education projects. The package includes nearly 400 chargers and funding for practical vehicle-grid integration resources. The release also links EV expansion to the National Electricity Strategy and says Canada's clean grid advantage depends on continued investment as transportation load grows.

Innovation & TransitionCould underwater turbines near Montreal's Old Port lead to a revolution in hydroelectricity?Montreal Gazette, August 3rd 2026 The Montreal Gazette examines a proposal to test underwater turbines in the St. Lawrence near the Old Port. The technology would generate from river current without a dam, but the story notes that navigation, fish habitat, ice, public visibility and permitting questions remain. For hydro-heavy provinces, the project is a small but useful test of low-head, urban renewable generation. Mississauga approves one-year moratorium on AI data centresGlobal News, July 29th 2026 Mississauga council approved a one-year pause on new AI data-centre applications while staff study land-use, power and community impacts. The local decision mirrors a broader utility-planning issue: hyperscale loads are arriving faster than many municipal rules were designed to handle. For distributors and planners, the debate is now moving from abstract load forecasts into zoning rooms. Worth NotingSaskatoon keeps emissions strategy despite SaskPower fuel-mix constraints.
