National HeadlinesOttawa backs Labrador hydro expansion with up to $10B in federal supportNatural Resources Canada, August 17th 2026 The federal government announced support for Churchill Falls upgrades, Gull Island, related transmission and Labrador Trough infrastructure. Canada says the combined construction program is valued near $70 billion and would add 14,000 MW of clean power while supporting mining, regional load growth and interprovincial supply. The package also refers the Labrador Trough clean-power corridor to the Major Projects Office. The Big ReadCanada Needs a Bigger Grid. Customers Need an Honest ConversationC.D. Howe Institute, August 4th 2026 Cole Diepold argues that Canada's recent period of comparatively stable electricity costs depended partly on flat demand and deferred infrastructure pressure. That period is ending as population growth, electrification, industrial demand and AI data centres push utilities into larger capital programs. The useful point for utility readers is not simply that rates will rise. It is that rate smoothing, subsidies and opaque cost transfers can make later increases more abrupt and harder to defend. The memo makes a clear case for publishing long-term cost forecasts, explaining capital needs plainly and treating public trust as part of grid delivery. Regional RoundupSite E dam proposal prompts calls for compensation and energy alternativesCBC News, August 14th 2026 CBC reports northeastern B.C. leaders want long-term compensation if the province advances BC Hydro's proposed Site E dam on the Peace River. The utility told regional officials that new firm power is needed for a projected 50 per cent demand increase by 2050. Local leaders warned that dams, wind projects, bridges and water-source planning are converging on the same communities.
Dawson Creek water pipeline estimate rises as drought pressure continuesCBC News, August 12th 2026 Dawson Creek staff say a replacement water-source pipeline could cost up to $272 million, nearly triple an earlier estimate. CBC reports the city is weighing Peace River, Pine River and Kiskatinaw River options after years of drought pressure. Site E planning is also part of the discussion because future reservoir flooding could affect potential intake and pipeline corridors. Policy & PricingOntario proposes data-centre approval test and separate electricity rate classEnvironmental Registry of Ontario, August 13th 2026 Ontario is consulting on a framework to assess new data centres by economic value, digital sovereignty, community benefits, security and environmental considerations. The Ministry of Energy and Mines is also proposing a separate rate class for new large data centres, potentially above 1 MW, so sector growth does not raise electricity bills for existing customers. The testimony has become part of the debate over Hydro's proposed $3-billion Brandon expansion, which would add 750 MW by 2030 as Manitoba plans for higher winter capacity needs.

Innovation & TransitionBC Hydro opens first Southern Gulf Islands fast-charge siteBC Hydro, August 17th 2026 BC Hydro opened a fast-charge site at the Salt Spring Island Fire Hall with two 180-kW chargers that can serve up to four vehicles using power sharing. The utility says the site is part of a $700-million plan to expand its public network to 3,500 charging ports by 2035, with larger hubs and faster equipment across the province. Yukon advocates push plug-in solar as rates rise and grid rules lagCBC News, August 15th 2026 CBC reports the Yukon Conservation Society is urging residents to consider plug-in solar, despite the technology remaining illegal in Canada because of certification and utility-safety concerns. The story highlights a familiar utility problem: customers want cheaper distributed energy, but the territory's grid has already struggled with weather-driven solar swings and delayed storage upgrades.
