National HeadlinesFederal government releases data centre policy signed by tech giantsCanada's National Observer, September 3rd 2026 Ottawa released a framework setting out federal expectations for responsible data centre development, signed by several large technology companies. The policy lands as hyperscale data centre proposals push utilities and municipalities to weigh connection requests measured in hundreds of megawatts. Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Minister Evan Solomon said the framework is non-binding, and that provinces, territories and municipalities hold the authority that decides where projects are actually built.
Construction begins on major BC transmission line aimed at powering northwestCanada's National Observer, September 3rd 2026 Construction is underway on the North Coast Transmission Line expansion, which will link Prince George to Terrace and is expected to more than double electricity supply to northwestern British Columbia. Governments estimate the expansion will contribute $10 billion a year to the provincial economy, spur 9,700 jobs and generate $950 million in municipal and provincial revenue. BC Hydro chief executive Charlotte Mitha said the utility is sourcing all the materials it can from Canada during construction. OpinionSupporting nuclear energy is great—but it's not Ottawa's place to pick Canada's nuclear winnersMacdonald-Laurier Institute, August 10th 2026 Heather Exner-Pirot, who leads energy, natural resources and environment work at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, welcomes Canada's first Nuclear Energy Strategy but argues Ottawa went a step too far. The strategy, released in June, rightly recognizes Canada's uranium fuel-cycle capability, proven reactor technology, skilled workforce and regulator, she writes. Her objection is that it explicitly puts a thumb on the scale for one reactor type, the CANDU, rather than setting a technology-neutral framework. Exner-Pirot notes Canada now has three credible reactor choices for new builds, and that the CANDU's use of natural uranium and heavy water — an advantage for limiting dependence on foreign enrichment — does not make it the right fit everywhere. The federal role, she argues, is to create conditions where the sector competes successfully at home and abroad, not to pick winners. For utilities weighing new capacity, the open question is whether federal preference narrows procurement options. Regional RoundupTrade war complicates Manitoba Hydro plan to buy gas turbines from U.S. manufacturerCBC News, September 2nd 2026 The Canada-U.S. trade war has complicated Manitoba Hydro's plan to buy gas turbines for its $3-billion Brandon generating station expansion from GE Vernova, a manufacturer based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Premier Wab Kinew cast doubt on the reservation agreement covering three turbines, saying he would not call it a done deal. Climate Action Team Manitoba, which opposes the gas build, argued the province should not spend billions on turbines manufactured in the United States.
Damaging storms sweep across Ontario, causing flooding, power outages in Toronto areaThe Globe and Mail, September 2nd 2026 Severe storms cut across the Greater Toronto Area late Wednesday afternoon, causing widespread power outages, localized flooding and serious damage to a major concert venue as torrential rain, large hail and a tornado risk moved over wide swaths of southern Ontario. The weather office issued multiple emergency alerts for parts of the GTA. Toronto Fire Services attended a scene where a downed tree took out a power line and started a fire.
Solar panels in Alberta, where a new per-panel recycling fee starts October 1st. Source: Global News. Policy & PricingAlberta introduces $14 solar panel recycling fee, landfill banGlobal News, September 4th 2026 Alberta will charge a $14-per-panel recycling fee on all new solar panels beginning October 1st and will ban panels from landfills. RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Affordability and Utilities, said the charge helps keep panels out of landfills when they reach end of life decades from now. Renewables industry representatives said the fee adds another burden on top of a swath of new provincial rules affecting solar development. Innovation & TransitionEnergy and Electricity Workforce Alliance launches to solidify Canada's energy superpower statusCanadian Renewable Energy Association, September 2nd 2026 Electricity Human Resources Canada, the Energy Council of Canada and the Canadian Renewable Energy Association launched the Energy and Electricity Workforce Alliance in Ottawa, one of six federal sector workforce alliances. The Alliance will target chronic shortages in critical occupations, from powerline technicians to mechanical engineers, as growing electricity demand, expanding export opportunities and regional labour market constraints strain employers and training systems across conventional energy, electricity and renewables.
