Canadian Swine SceneCanada faces greater pork-sector risk if CUSMA trade relationship deterioratesFarms.com, October 5th 2026 Polar Pork partner Florian Possberg told Farmscape that Canada’s hog sector has more at stake than its U.S. counterpart if the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement unravels. Trade tensions have not yet disrupted day-to-day hog industry activity, he said, but “that could change in a heartbeat.” Possberg pointed to the sector’s reliance on U.S. market access and the highly integrated North American supply chain, noting Canada’s dependency on southbound trade far exceeds American reliance on northbound trade. Veterinarians offer novel ideas to diagnose hog herdsManitoba Co-operator, October 4th 2026 Swine veterinarian Blaine Tully reviews newer surveillance tools for hog herds, from hanging ropes in pens to collect oral fluids from hundreds of pigs at once, to walking pens in disposable shoe covers to detect porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus by PCR. He outlines when PCR versus antibody (ELISA) testing fits, and how pooled sampling stretches testing budgets for trace-back investigations and PRRS or mycoplasma elimination programs. The U.S. Pork ReportPork gets a seat at the China table as farm bill waits out the midtermsNational Hog Farmer, October 2nd 2026 Following President Trump’s Sept. 24 meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two countries extended their trade truce to Jan. 10 and released a “30-for-30” framework under the new U.S.-China Board of Trade. China’s list of U.S. goods recommended for tariff relief covers 1,619 items, including live hogs and pork. U.S. pork variety meats still face a 47% duty in China, their largest market, and no timeline for actual tariff reductions has been set. USTR seeks input on 2027 USMCA joint reviewFeedstuffs, October 5th 2026 The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has opened a public consultation ahead of the 2027 joint review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. After the U.S. declined to extend the pact in its current form at this year’s first review, the three countries now meet annually to decide whether to extend it or let it expire on July 1, 2036. Public comments and requests to appear at the hearing are due Jan. 12, 2027.

Genetics & Breeding InnovationClarifying the role of boar semen as a source of APPV infectionFarms.com, October 5th 2026 Dr. Brad DeWolf of Southwest Ontario Veterinary Services summarizes a Norwegian study that detected atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV), the leading cause of congenital tremor, in the semen of 50.9% of 110 breeding boars screened. Shedding usually lasted under three months, though one boar shed intermittently for seven. Researchers warn rapid boar turnover in studs, which drives genetic improvement, may keep semen a persistent transmission source. Exposing gilts before first pregnancy remains the best protection. Balanced Breeding & SustainabilityEvery Pig Matters: $1.64M Pig Livability Project targets producer marginsPork Business, October 5th 2026 The Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research, the Pork Checkoff and industry partners announced $1,643,357 in new funding on Oct. 5 for the Pig Livability Project, led by Iowa State University with Kansas State University. Seven newly funded studies cover sow mortality, stillbirths, anemia, transport losses and late-gestation nutrition. The Checkoff estimates a 1% gain in pig survival would add 1.2 million pigs a year to U.S. supply, allowing roughly 46,000 fewer sows. New tool for monitoring endemic swine pathogens: a data-driven etiology indexPork Business, October 2nd 2026 A Swine Health Information Center-funded project at Iowa State University has built an index ranking the activity of 81 endemic swine disease agents, drawing on 59,950 tissue cases from the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory between 2020 and 2024. PRRSV and Streptococcus suis consistently ranked highest, while porcine sapovirus and astrovirus showed rising activity and geographic spread. PCV2 dropped out of the top 10 by 2024. Results are available on an interactive dashboard that will be updated as new data arrive. Market & Supply Chain DynamicsSmithfield’s new Sioux Falls facility faces permit setbackNational Hog Farmer, October 5th 2026 A Minnehaha County circuit judge has sent Smithfield Foods’ conditional use permit for its planned Sioux Falls pork plant back to the city council, ruling it failed to meet two city ordinances covering groundwater protection, fire hazards and odor control. Nearby landowners had sued over the plant’s move to Foundation Park. The facility, announced in February, will replace Smithfield’s century-old Sioux Falls plant, which employs 3,200 people. DOJ objects to $202 million meat processor wage settlementThe Pig Site, October 1st 2026 The U.S. Justice Department has urged a federal judge in Colorado to reject more than $202 million in proposed wage-fixing settlements with red meat processors including Tyson Foods, National Beef and Hormel, arguing they lack safeguards against future violations. The 2022 class action alleges JBS, Tyson and others shared confidential pay data to suppress wages at 140 plants. Tyson and JBS agreed to pay $127.2 million combined; defendants deny wrongdoing.
